CAO Annual Report 2005 - 2006
Annual ReportOn Tuesday, February 14, 2006, the National Gallery of Canada generously welcomed 250 CAO patrons to the Great Hall to celebrate the 17th Annual CAO Sweetheart Lunch for the Arts hosted by Mayor Bob Chiarelli. Reception performances were provided by A Company of Fools and accordionist, Laurie Rosewarne. Visual art, exhibited throughout the hall, was provided by the Inuit Art Foundation, Lafrenière and Pai Gallery and Snapdragon Gallery. Thank you to the 60 Balloon Draw and Silent Auction Donors. Special thanks to our event sponsors, Thyme & Again Creative Catering, the National Gallery of Canada and our media sponsor, The Ottawa Citizen. A big THANK YOU! to the artists, arts groups and businesses who volunteered and contributed to our fifth and final Annual Holiday Silent Auction. Those contributions helped to raise funds in support of the CAO's programs and services. From the scintillating opportunities of stuffing envelopes and preparing for events, to the glamorous work on Committees and the Board, volunteers help to keep us on track. Here's a few examples of what 84 volunteers who contributed 2,360 hours, assisted with in the past year:

The room has even been used as a site location for film productions. As part of the Micaela Fitch Facilitation Program, group members can use this space at no cost three times per year. Additional bookings are available at low cost. Thanks to a grant from the City of Ottawa, new equipment will improve the effectiveness of the space. This is a room that works!

NEW MANTRA
Executive Director's ReportThe past year stands out in stark contrast to the difficult times that surrounded the 2004 arts funding threat. The shift was felt by our organization as we entered into a new arts service agreement with the City of Ottawa. That change has resulted in an increased level of service and delivery. There's good reason to feel optimistic about the future of the arts in this city. A cluster of arts activity is growing in center west Ottawa, and other urban areas are also poised for cultural transformation. To continue to build cultural capacity we need to respond to a number of challenges head on. We need affordable arts space, we need to connect with non-traditional partners, we need to discard out-dated ideas, we need to take risks and we need to speak out. Something is changing. I'm excited about the new connections that the CAO has established and look forward to continuing the momentum in the year ahead.
THANK YOU!Corporate Patrons The CAO gratefully acknowledges the support of the City of Ottawa and the Ontario Arts Council.
