Carleton University Art Gallery
3 New Shows
Until 14 December 2007
Dè T'a Hoti Ts'eeda: ‘We Live Securely by the Land'
This exhibit features rarely seen 19th-century artefacts selected from the National Museums Scotland's Northern Athapaskan collection, the oldest and most extensive collection of 19th-century Dene material in the world today.

Confluence: First Nations Art from John Cook's Collection
Curated by Sandra Dyck
The latest in a series of exhibitions highlighting local collections, Confluence presents a selection of First Nations art from the holdings of the Ottawa architect John Cook, a longtime devotee of the work of Canadian First Nations artists.

Lyne Lapointe: La Perle
Curated by Diana Nemiroff
La Perle features a new, intimate body of work by this senior Canadian artist, realized over the past couple of years in her rustic studio near Mansonville, Québec. Made up of some twenty individual pieces - drawings and historical photographs studded with light-reflecting beads - La Perle continues Lapointe's research into the phenomenon of vision, through materials and forms that disturb fixed perception.

IPO Gallery
H'ART OF OTTAWA
H'Art of Ottawa is a unique place in the city where people find an outlet to be creative. The only unique thing about this creative hot spot is that the people who come to make art are developmentally disabled adults - or are they?

"H'Art of Ottawa is an organization that everyone in Ottawa needs to know about", states IPO Gallery Director, Francesco Corsaro. H'Art of Ottawa provides a venue that strives to increase literacy through interaction with others in a welcoming, creative environment. Partnering with IPO Gallery, whose mandate it is to provide space for emerging artists and to fund scholarships and arts education, is a great fit. Francesco Corsaro goes on to say, "This is a great opportunity to buy great, affordable art, while at the same time supporting an organization that works to make life better for others." H'Art of Ottawa will also have their holiday cards available for sale, with all the proceeds going toward H'Art of Ottawa operations.

Sharon Van Starkenburg
Girlhood Jag
Karsh-Masson Gallery
VanStarkenburg's selected body of work explores the sexualization of girls in Western culture, and the onus placed upon them for provoking desire, protectiveness and anxiety in others. The intimate pieces bare the acute insecurities experienced by the girl/woman represented in each. She links her worthiness and acceptability with her ability to please. While she is doubtful of her prettiness, she remains embarrassingly hopeful. The viewer reacts with a mixture of pity, fear and chagrin to witness her visceral obsessions. She is caught in various mental jags, unable to release herself, as yet, from the indoctrinations that she has carried through from girlhood to womanhood.
