Nancy Burke
Nancy Burke recently was invited to join a very talented group of Artists showing at the HOMESTEAD GALLERY - 'Kemptville's Finest Art Gallery' www.homestead-gallery.com This association is a fantastic fit (for Nancy) due in large part to the wonderfully exciting 'vision' that gallery owner Dave Leonard has expounded.

SLOVENIAN NEW WAVE COMES TO OTTAWA!
CFI Presents a Selection of the Best of New Slovenian Cinema
"One of the most exciting developments in contemporary European cinema in the last decade is the very impressive arrival and persistence of a distinctive, accomplished body of work from Slovenia […]As with other cinematic waves, the Slovenian version is a winning combination of artistic invention with low budgets, intimate stories, marginal protagonists, and location shooting."
- Tom McSorley, CFI Director
This six-film survey, drawn from the Slovenian retrospective presented in July 2008 by the Film Society of Lincoln Centre in New York, is programmed by Richard Pena and organized by Irena Kovarova, a New York based independent film progammer. Presented in collaboration with the Slovenian Film Fund and the Embassy of Slovenia.
THURS. DEC. 4th, 7pm
SHORT CIRCUITS (2007) is an engaging film invloving the interconnected stories of a bus driver, an abandoned baby and her mother, a beautiful doctor, a self-pitying paraplegic, a divorced father, and a terribly frightened gas station attendant. Starring the multi-talented Tjasa Zeleznik, who shines in three challenging roles.
FRI. DEC. 5th, 7pm
Set in the early 1970s, when the American cultural invasion of Yugoslavia had just begun, SWEET DREAMS (2001) tells the story of of thirteen-year-old Egon, who struggles to catch up to the cultural shift and to define himself amidst great change.
FRI. DEC. 5th, 9pm
A finely calibrated, freshly comic first feature from writer-director Janez Burger, IDLE RUNNING (1999) was a favourite with audiences and critics around the world, and won the Grand Prix at the annual Slovenian Film Festival. A film about a depressed and slothful student, Dizzy, and his life-changing encounter with his new roommate Marko. According to Variety's Eddie Cockrell, IDLE RUNNING is an amusing combination of SLACKER and CLERKS meeting "in a Ljubljiana dorm room."
SAT. DEC. 6th, 7pm
GUARDIAN OF THE FRONTIER (2002), the first Slovenian film directed by a woman, is a wild ride that combines sexy suspense with folkloric fantasy, and has been described as a cross between DELIVERANCE and THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. Set on the border between Slovenia and Croatia, the film follows the surreal journey of three young women on a canoe trip.
SAT. DEC. 6th, 9pm
SPARE PARTS (2002) tackles the vexing problem of human trafficking - a major problem in Slovenia - from the unusual perspective of the smugglers. Set in the bleak industrial town of Krško, the film follows the ranks of a group of smugglers who transport illegal immigrants across the country.
THURS. DEC. 11, 7pm
One of the best loved all Slovenian films, VESNA (1953) is a surprisingly gentle college comedy that became a huge hit and helped put Slovenian cinema on the map. A treasure of a film from the beginning of the Slovenian (new) cinematic wave.
All films with English subtitles.
PREVIEW DVDS AVAILABLE FROM CFI ON REQUEST.
All screenings are in the Auditorium of the National Library and Archives Canada, 395 Wellinton.
Tickets are $10 without a CFI membership, and only $6 for members. Annual memberships are available at all screenings for only $10. Phone the CANADIAN FILM INSTITUTE at (613) 232-6727 or visit www.cfi-icf.ca for further details.

Alexandre Castonguay and Mathieu Bouchard: Reverse Engineered
Until 1 February 2009
Curated by Sandra Dyck
Artists have been using computers to make their work since the 1960s, and this exhibition invites us to reconsider their vanguard efforts from a contemporary perspective. Castonguay and Bouchard are selecting from CUAG's collection several computer-aided silkscreen prints made in the 1970s by pioneers of the genre including Georg Nees, Frieder Nake, and Manfred Mohr. The print portfolios were accompanied by the artists' texts and diagrams, which explain their intentions and methodologies.
Castonguay and Bouchard will make three wall-mounted "plotters" that generate drawings solely by means of software-based image analysis of the early computer prints, with the aim of formulating the rules of their creation. These rules will then be applied to create, in a tongue-in-cheek way, a series of subsequent drawings. This closes the conceptual loop by having a computer re-assess, or "reverse engineer," the work of the early computer artists. As Castonguay has observed, the exhibition explores some of the persistent questions attendant on digitally-aided art: the agency of the artist versus the machine, the end of objecthood, and the integration of technology into our everyday lives.
Invention and Revival: The Colour Drypoints of David Milne and John Hartman
Until 1 February 2009
Curated by Rosemarie Tovell
In 1980, Rosemarie Tovell curated for the National Gallery of Canada an exhibition called Reflections in a Quiet Pool: The Prints of David Milne, which explored Milne's invention of the multiple-plate colour drypoint. The drypoint is the simplest of printmaking techniques. Lines are scratched into copper or zinc plates, creating a residual metal "burr" that later catches the ink, creating soft lines that are more akin to drawing than to the finely detailed lines of etching or engraving, which resemble those made with pen and ink.
Milne exploited his invention to gorgeous effect but despite (and in fact because of) his mastery of it, other artists did not follow suit. John Hartman visited Reflections in a Quiet Pool and later contacted Tovell to examine with her many of Milne's drypoints in the National Gallery's collection. Hartman was inspired to take up the technique and has, since the mid-1980s, produced a remarkable body of prints that shares much in common with Milne's oeuvre, in aesthetic, geographic, and spiritual terms. Invention and Revival brings together forty-two prints by Milne and Hartman, loaned by Hartman, the National Gallery and by private collectors, in order to explore the affinities between the two artists. The exhibition concludes with Hartman's recent and spectacular Cities prints, which demonstrate his continuing drive to push the limits of the drypoint technique. The exhibition is accompanied by a major hardcover catalogue with essays by Tovell and Anne-Marie Ninacs, and a conversation on colour drypoints between Hartman and David Milne Jr.
Rosemarie Tovell is a former curator of prints and drawings at the National Gallery of Canada, and a leading authority on David Milne's work. She curated two Milne exhibitions for the National Gallery, David Milne: Painting Place (1976) and Reflections in a Quiet Pool: The Prints of David Milne (1980).
Ron Martin, Behind the Scenes: Works of Art on Paper
Until 1 February 2009
Curated by Brydon Smith
Although Ron Martin is best known as a painter, this exhibition comprises 42 works of art on paper, selected from about 700 in CUAG's collection. They were done in a variety of mediums at all hours of the night and day and range from abstract to figurative. Very few of them have ever been exhibited, so this show will provide an opportunity for the public to see a little-known aspect of the artist's work. Some of drawings relate to his paintings, while others stand on their own. A few of Ron Martin's paintings will be exhibited as counterpoints to these works on paper.
Brydon Smith is a former curator of contemporary and modern art and assistant director at the National Gallery of Canada. He previously curated an exhibition of Ron Martin's paintings for American artist Donald Judd's Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas.

Food Bank Benefit Concert
CHRISTMAS GOOSE IS BACK!
6th Annual: Local Songwriters' Christmas Concert Supports
the Ottawa Food Bank
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6TH
NAC 4TH STAGE
The time of year has come again, when local singer-songwriters bring the festive spirit to the NAC Fourth Stage in the form of the 6th Annual Christmas GOOSE concert. GOOSE is proud to share the proceeds of the concert and CD sales with The Ottawa Food Bank. "At last year's performance I was approached by a teenager there with his mom, who told me the Christmas GOOSE concert has become a tradition for him!" says Pat Moore, organizer and one of the founding members of GOOSE, a not for profit collective for local songwriters. Each year the concert brings back some performers from previous years, as well as injecting some new songs and voices to the show. The audience will be treated to songs from either of the 2 GOOSE Christmas CDs, some new songs, and some traditional - including a few carols to sing along to.
Kick-start the holiday season by coming to the 6th Annual Christmas GOOSE concert, Saturday, December 6th, 2008, at the NAC Fourth Stage. Returning to the Christmas GOOSE stage this year are favourites Lynne Hanson, Pat Moore, Tom Lips, Jennifer Noxon (of Frida's Brow), and Kate & Hollis. We're also really excited to include for the first time, Sally Robinson (of The Toasted Westerns and The Herb Girls), Jean-Marc Lalonde (of Deux Saisons and Pardon My French), and Healy & Juravich - this show promises to be just the right introduction to your Christmas or other seasonal celebration! Come enjoy this great evening, as local singer-songwriters bring you a mix of original and traditional seasonal songs.
The concert is presented by GOOSE (a cooperative supporting the efforts of local songwriters), Nutshell Music & Event Management, CKCU, and the Ottawa Food Bank.
Tickets are $18, and are available at the NAC Box Office / TicketMaster (surcharge applies), and the Ottawa Folklore Centre (OFC Music).
Also available at the concert and retail outlets will be "Christmas GOOSE" and "The Christmas Platter", two CDs making a wonderful collection of original Christmas songs. The songs come in a variety of styles - jazz, funky, folk, and traditional - and have received considerable airplay. At $15 and $20 respectively (of which $5 will go to the Ottawa Food Bank over the holiday season), each CD makes a unique and affordable gift that shows off our home town and supports those in need, all in one enjoyable, affordable, and easy-to-ship package!

LUXURE

December 5-6, 2008
I sat in on the process of Martin's today and just observed what he was exploring. It is only his third day therefore it is still very early in his process. I watched a section called the 'Board Meeting' and even though it was understated, the whole premise was quite funny. He seems to be looking into the idea of protocol (the accepted procedure or system of rules governing affairs of state or diplomatic occasions) to make something or someone's role important. It is good to observe how we adults seem to be re-creating roles like we use to as children. Martin is entering into a world self-reflection and perhaps self-depreciation with our dancers, and it is fascinating to watch.

For those interested in the international ceramic scene check out their site at www.wocef.com www.wocef.com/biennale/eng/index.asp?lang=eng&menu_id=index They take their ceramics very seriously in that part of the world. Au 21 décembre 2008
Horaire :
De 12 h 30 à 19 h 30 du lundi au samedi
Information :

Adrian Göllner, Laura Margita, Mark Marsters, Jim Thomson, Eric Walker

As the news of the world's economic problems gets gloomier, if ever we needed to light the darkness, it's now. So, Ottawa StoryTellers to the rescue! The solstice nears, the nights get darker and darker, but Ottawa StoryTellers brings tales to light the world: from the ancient tradition of the Oak King and the Holly King, who twice a year do battle to see who will rule the world, to a Victorian bachelor, who discovers the joys of bringing good fortune to others, to people suffering in the shadow of a World War finding a glimmer of hope in the darkness.
The tellers are Ruthanne Edward, Marta Singh, and Mary Wiggin, accompanied by carols and wassail songs performed by Neville Miller.

A holiday treat, the exhibition presents sculptures, three dimensional works on canvases and artworks in non traditional media.
In collaboration with the National Capital Network of Sculptors, we are very excited to introduce eight more sculptors to our patrons. This exhibition features some of the best known talents in Ottawa. You don't want to miss this rare opportunity to appreciate their works.
The creations of five artists that challenge our conceptualization of canvas as a flat medium complement this eclectic collection. Libérés sur parole... Superstitions
