A Company of Fools
A Midwinter's Dream Tale
Until December 18, 2011
@ GCTC

What do you get when you cross two theatre classics with two irreverent clowns? A mischievous mid-winter treat, just in time for the holiday season! The worlds of A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Winter's Tale collide when Pomme and 'Restes embark on a frosty adventure of Shakespearean proportions. Join in the fun as they get lost in the Land of the Fairies, battle the Abominable Snowman, save the Queen's baby, and search for ice cream. This entertaining holiday romp is packed with humour, spectacle, music and maybe... just maybe... a little frozen dessert.

Saturday, December 10, 2011
Arts Court Theatre, 2 Daly Ave
11:00 am and 4:00 pm
Tickets: $15
Box Office: 613-564-7240

"Glorious, stirring sight! The poetry of motion! The only way to travel! O bliss! O poop-poop! O my!"

The language, the characters, and the sheer joy of The Wind in the Willows - it's the kind of book that inspires young people to read, to write, to value friendship, to love nature, and to want to know more.

This holiday season, children (K to Gr. 6), parents and caregivers can witness this childhood classic come to life on stage at the Arts Court Theatre for two shows 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on December 10, 2011.

Ottawa puppet masters, John Nolan and Kathy MacLellan of Rag & Bone Puppet Theatre, breathe life into Kenneth Grahame's magical characters using large puppets, hand puppets and masks, acted by humans and on film, which is underscored by Russell Levia's live music!

Four little animals - the shy Mole, Rat, who loves the river, Badger who doesn't go out much and Toad, whose boisterous adventures can have dangerous consequences - stand up to bullies, rescue a baby otter, and learn how to listen to what the wind whispers in the willows.

It's an adventure for children of all ages that you won't want to miss!

Tickets are limited, call today!

Thirteen Strings
2011-2012 Season
Thirteen Strings Chamber Orchestra and Kevin Mallon, Artistic Director are delighted to announce the new season for 2011-2012.

December 6, 2011 Eternal Light Divine
Ottawa soprano Shannon Mercer joins the orchestra for the Christmas concert at Dominion Chalmers Church in a program that is bound to delight! Scarlatti's Christmas cantata and Messiah excerpts are juxtaposed with Manfredini's concerto for 2 trumpets and Handel's Eternal Source of Light Divine from the Birthday Ode for Queen Anne.

January 13, 2012 Wolfgang and Menahem
The coup of the season: extraordinary pianist Menahem Pressler will play Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 12 in A, K. 414 with the orchestra! This octogenarian defies all convention. He is still playing as well as ever and relishing his new found solo career after a lifetime as pianist with the famed Beaux Arts Trio. Wolgang's Divertimento in D Major KV 136 is featured along with his lesser known contemporary Franz Beck and his Symphony in opus 2 no.2 for strings.

February 10, 2012 Northern Lights
Talented young Canadian conductor Bradley Thachuk joins the orchestra with one of the world's greatest double bass virtuosi, Joel Quarrington, in a program bringing us to the lands of the midnight sun! Danish composer Niels Gade's Notturno is juxtaposed with the extraordinary Estonian composer, Erki- Sven Tuur and his Insula Deserta. Quarrington joins the orchestra for Canada's Michael C Baker and his Contours for Bass, Harpsichord with Thomas Annand.

March 2, 2012 Les Amis
The Thirteen Strings are joined by Toronto duo, Les Amis featuring Lynn Kuo, violin and Marianna Humetska, piano. Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara's Suite for Strings is coupled with two works by Canadian composer Alice Ho, her Capriccio Ballo for Violin, Piano and String Orchestra and a new work commissioned specially for this concert! Handel's Concerto Grosso in G minor, Op. 6, No. 6 and Peter Warlock's Serenade for Strings round out the program.

April 27, 2012 Handel Opera Giulio Cesare, complete opera - semi-staged
Last, but definitely not least, we present a semi-staged version of Handel's greatest opera Giulio Cesare at Dominion Chalmers Church. In conjunction with the Centre for Opera Studies in Italy and in a production by famed stage director Tom Diamond (of Bathroom Divas fame), a cast of young professional singers will reproduce the production as performed in Sulmona, Italy under Kevin Mallon's direction.

Formed in 1976, Thirteen Strings is one of Canada's premiere professional string ensembles whose mission is to provide audiences with the leading edge of live, classical music where sophisticated repertoire intersects with dynamic, high quality performances. Subscriptions for the season are available on line at www.thirteenstrings.ca or by calling 613-738-7888.
