Winners of the Corel Endowment for the Arts Awards
June 21, 2005
The Council for the Arts in Ottawa is pleased to announce the recipients of this year's Corel Endowment for the Arts Awards. The Awards were presented at the CAO’s Annual General Meeting held on June 21, 2005.
Evelyn Stroobach received funds to support her collaboration with the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra to professionally record her contemporary classical composition "La petite danse." This recording will be included in a CD entitled Aurora Borealis, which will feature ten original compositions. Following acceptance of her award, Ms Stroobach noted, "Since I completed my music education, it has been my goal to create music in Ottawa, and tap into the amazing musical talent that exists in this city. These funds will help realize that goal."
Local writer Fateema Sayani accepted her award, which will assist in the production of a book titled, Hipster and Poser: A Companion Guide to Ottawa, The Character of the City. The book will provide an alternative perspective of our city, reflecting the diversity of those who live and work here. Ms Sayani’s project will involve contributions of more than twenty artists of various arts disciplines. Ms Sayani commented, "These funds will allow me to appropriately compensate artists for their work. This is something I believe is extremely important."
CAO Awards Chair Jane Sadler noted that the Awards Jury reviewed a broad range of artists' projects. "The Jury was impressed with the strength and professionalism of the submissions received this year. We are pleased to make a contribution to both of these projects and assist with the associated artists’ fees."
The Corel Endowment for the Arts was established at the Community Foundation of Ottawa in 1997 through the combined fundraising efforts of the CAO and Corel Corporation. The annual interest is used to assist artists in all disciplines. The first awards were presented in 1998. To date, the fund has contributed to 21 artists' projects.
