"Ryan was a unanimous choice among the jurors," says Nichole McGill, CAO Board Member, Chaire of the Awards Sub-Committee and local author. "Not only has Ryan demonstrated tremendous growth in his artistic work over the years, but his support within the community, particularly with youth, is exceptional." Stec's work varies widely from live performance-based experimental video to traditional documentary projects. He is also the current Artistic Director of artengine. "It is an honor to be a recipient of this new award in Ottawa," says Stec. "The Council for the Arts in Ottawa has done excellent work in developing an award that responds to the difficulties facing artists developing out of their emerging stage. "The lure of trying to establish oneself in a major centre is strong, but recognition from awards such as this reminds an artist of the support within the local community. I am proud of the Ottawa artists working in media art, performance work, installation and electronic art who are making significant contributions on national and international levels and am grateful to be part of the community here."
