Alexis Andrew and Elizabeth Mackinnon - TALK SHOW - collective (gulp) dance projects TALK SHOW - brand new work by collective (gulp) dance projectsOttawa's dance iconoclasts, collective (gulp) dance projects bring a new project to Arts Court Theatre, December 12, 13 & 14, 2006. TALK SHOW combines movement, text, installation and video manipulation to uncover the fears and vulnerabilities we cover and exploit to build our public faces. Using transcripts from actual interviews with celebrities, sports heroes, politicians and reality tv stars, the performers transform text and movement into a personal search for authentic voice and human connection. During TALK SHOW, Alexis and Elizabeth channel the words of Brad Pitt and Jay Leno, get swept up in "hockey erotica", build upon platitudes and confessions, dance to laughtracks, get packaged and shipped out and provide non-denial denials and non-apologetic apologies for transgressions they were never party to. TALK SHOW is collective (gulp)'s first full-length theatrical project and the result of a year of intensive creative collaboration. TALK SHOW draws on the creativity and performance experience of collective (gulp)'s artistic directors (Alexis Kate Andrew and Elizabeth MacKinnon), the visual art of Uta Riccius, and input from UK-based design consultant Katherine Gillieson, as well as Peter Ryan & Naomi Sparrow (movement) and Lisa Twardowska (theatre/clown). It also incorporates video manipulation designed by Elizabeth MacKinnon. Driven by a shared sense of humour and desire to make thoughtful and thought-provoking works, Alexis and Elizabeth have developed an original form of dance-based interdisciplinary performance. Both artists have performed and studied across Canada, the US, UK and Europe and have been deeply involved with the development of Movement Arts Ottawa (an artist-run studio at 111A Rideau Street, formerly Dance Network). Alexis and Elizabeth also co-teach contact improvisation with artist/dancer Kenneth Emig. collective (gulp) dance projects has been making and bringing innovative dance to Ottawa streets, galleries and theatre spaces since 2002. (gulp) was the force behind the inaugural square zero independent dance festival (2004) and square zero: the second edition, a week-long interdisciplinary residency (2005). (gulp) is grateful for the support of the Ontario Arts Council, the City of Ottawa and the Community Foundation of Ottawa, as well as for the advice and assistance provided by the Council for the Arts in Ottawa.
