Theatre Ontario Presents 2006 Sandra Tulloch Award for Innovation in the Arts to Peter Honeywell, Executive Director of the Council for the Arts in Ottawa

Theatre Ontario is pleased to award the 2006 Sandra Tulloch Award for Innovation in the Arts to Peter Honeywell, Executive Director of the Council for the Arts in Ottawa. The award will be presented to Mr. Honeywell on February 12, 2007 at the 18th Annual CAO Sweetheart Lunch for the Arts at the National Gallery of Canada. The presentation will be made by Angela Rebeiro, Publisher of Playwrights Canada Press, and John Goddard, Executive Director of Theatre Ontario.

The Sandra Tulloch Award for Innovation in the Arts is presented annually to an individual or collective who has demonstrated leadership over a long career, and a passionate commitment to deepening the scope and broadening the appearance of the arts in Ontario through innovative and practical approaches.

"Sandy is delighted with the choice as she has been an admirer of Peter and his strong advocacy across the province," said Angela Rebeiro, Chair of the Sandra Tulloch Selection Committee.

Peter Honeywell was born and grew up in Ottawa. He worked as a visual artist specializing in textile design from 1973 to 1988, and exhibited in galleries including Hiberna Gallery (Ottawa), Prime Gallery (Toronto), and Mirifique (Montreal). He has played a key role in establishing not-for-profit organizations and arts cooperatives, and has held numerous board and committee positions with community organizations. His involvement with the Council for the Arts in Ottawa began in 1986 when he joined the Board of Directors. He accepted the position of Executive Producer of the Festival of the Arts in 1988 and 1989, and the position of Executive Director in 1990.

Over the past eighteen years, Mr. Honeywell has held membership on a variety of municipal advisory panels and committees, including two years as a selection committee member for two City of Ottawa public art projects in collaboration with architects Raymond Moriyama and Moshe Safdie. His most recent municipal appointment was to the City of Ottawa's Arts Investment Strategy Committee. At the community level, he holds the position of advisor to the Crichton Cultural Community Centre, and volunteers for numerous cultural initiatives and programs. He worked with community leaders from a wide variety of social services to build the My Ottawa Includes Culture campaign in 2004, and the Imagine Ottawa social forum in 2006.

Peter Honeywell has been active at the provincial level and was elected to the Community Arts Ontario Board from 1995 to 2000. He held the position of Chair from 1998-2000. In 2005, he accepted a position on the Steering Committee for Artscape's Creative Clusters, a province-wide cultural facility development program.

The Sandra Tulloch Award for Innovation in the Arts was established in 1998 by friends and colleagues of Sandra on her retirement as Executive Director of Theatre Ontario. The award pays tribute to the outstanding contribution that Sandra Tulloch made to the arts in Ontario. For nearly twenty years, she played a pivotal role at Theatre Ontario, facilitating numerous visionary initiatives in the community, professional and educational theatre sectors. As an arts administrator, producer, arts advocate, project leader and community activist, Sandra has continued to devote an enormous amount of time and energy to the arts throughout the province. The award was designed by artist Barry Burniston of North Bay, with bronze casting by Craig Meschino of Toronto. Past recipients of the award are Tim Jones & Susan Serran, Angela Rebeiro, Jane Marsland, Myles Warren, Jini Stolk, and Claire Hopkinson.
